Education & Training

Education Programs / Courses Available

The Dizziness & Balance Disorders Centre is often involved in running or participating in education seminars and courses, such as the Multi-Disciplinary Team Approach to the Dizzy Patient.

As new courses are produced or existing courses are run again, we will list them here.

In the meantime, you will find a selection of the most common presentations we accept at the Centre.

Students experience and learn from internationally acclaimed professionals about medical, surgical, psychological, musculoskeletal (upper cervical and temporo-mandibular dysfunction) and vestibular rehabilitation and consider the evaluation, treatment, and management of the dizzy patient in the Australian context of health service delivery.

Some common presentations and assessment tools

FND

A functional neurological disorder (FND) is a condition in which patients experience neurological symptoms such as weakness, movement disorders, sensory symptoms and blackouts.

ICS Impulse

For many people maintaining balance isn’t easy. Vestibular patients referred to Prof. Sharpe are assessed using a range of approaches including ICS Impulse, Video Frenzel, and the video Head Impulse Test (v-HIT)

MdDS

Mal de Débarquement syndrome (MdDS) is persistent dizziness, disequilibrium and rocking sensation (like being on a boat) on return to a stable environment (land) following motion adaptation.

Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s disease/syndrome is idiopathic and due to endolymphatic hydrops. It is characterised by fullness in the ear, episodic vertigo, and fluctuating hearing loss and tinnitus.

Migraines

Episodic ataxia is genetic and an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by sporadic bouts of ataxia (severe discoordination) with or without myokymia (continuous muscle movement).

Vestibular & Children

Vestibular Dysfunction occurs in children by being damaged by disease or injury in childhood prior to the maturation of the system. Sadly, this is often overlooked.
