Optokinetic Stimulation

Professor Dr Margie H Sharpe PhD, MSc, Bachelor Applied Science (Physiotherapy) AUA is the Director and Principal of the Dizziness & Balance Disorders Centre in Adelaide, South Australia.

She has a longstanding interest in MdDS, and as a physiotherapist says, “we have had no suitable intervention for this disorder until now”. Hence, during 2016, she travelled to New York and spent time working with Dr Dai in his Clinic and she now offers the same treatment protocol to MdDS patients in the southern hemisphere.

Drs Mingjia Dai, Bernard Cohen, Eric Smoutha and Catherine Cho, Department of Neurology and Otolaryngology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, USA, first published their ground breaking and original research work in Frontiers of Neurology – “Readaptation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex relieves the mal de debarquement syndrome” (2014) [1].

This year they published another study, “Treatment of the Mal de Debarquement Syndrome: A 1-year follow-up also in Frontiers of Neurology” (2017) [2].

Their findings have shown that many define people with an unequivocal diagnosis of MdDS respond favourably to optokinetic stimulation, which reduces or resolves their symptoms by readapting the vestibulo-ocular reflex.

This is a break through for MdDS sufferers.

Margie’s consultations are complex, however she cautions, “not every MdDS patient responds to treatment in the same way, and this raises ongoing questions for future research“.
