Competency and Evidence-Based Vestibular Training and Certification Course
Certificate of Attendance and/or Achievement; Multi-Disciplinary Integrated Team Approach to the Dizzy Patient
This course is designed for physiotherapists working in the fields of neurology, gerontology, falls clinics and medical practitioners; in particular general practitioners, neurologists, Rehabilitation physicians, Occupational physicians, Geriatricians and Gerontologists, and Ear Nose and Throat surgeons.
Experience and learn from internationally acclaimed professionals about medical, surgical, psychological, musculoskeletal (upper cervical and temporo-mandibular dysfunction) and common vestibular rehabilitation, and consider the evaluation, treatment, and management of the dizzy patient in the Australian context of health service delivery.
We provide;
- An overview of applied vestibular anatomy and physiology with emphasis on the ageing human vestibular system and the consequences related to postural control, gait, gaze stabilisation, and pathophysiology of common peripheral and central vestibular disorders.
- A basic understanding of the auditory system in health and disease and its relevance, as well as a basic understanding of tinnitus including pulsatile tinnitus and its relevance to the vestibular physiotherapist.
- Competency testing, interpretation of findings, normal and abnormal oculomotor movements and common types of nystagmus (videos and patients) on course.
- Clinical videos, patients with a vestibular disorder, and time to practice your assessment and treatment skills and ask questions.
We examine;
- The causes of dizziness — such as anxiety/depression, peripheral vestibular, vestibular migraine, upper cervical dysfunction (cervicogenic) and drug related and how to differentiate between them.
- Acute care of the vestibular patient and post-surgery.
- Diagnosis is mandatory for appropriate intervention and requires a multi-disciplinary team approach. Vestibular physiotherapists need to refer patients to the appropriate health professional and seek a second opinion.
- Clinical decision making with comprehensive case studies.
- Vestibular asymmetries in the age-related process.
- Role of vestibular disorders and vestibular asymmetries in falls.
All participants must attend the full 5 days of the Course and are required to demonstrate evaluation and treatment techniques correctly with an understanding of their purpose, interpretation of the findings, and contraindications, and successfully complete a written take-home examination and oculomotor examination.
A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded for attending the 5-day Course full-time and completing competency testing. A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to those who pass the video and written examination.
